Closing Lectures

The event began in 2003 under the name "Last Lecture" by Founding President Tosun Terzioğlu. The Last Lecture is held traditionally as 'Closing Lecture' since Sabancı University Academic Year 2004-2005. The Closing Lecture Speakers are as follows: 'Georgios Papandreou (2005), Yaşar Kemal (2006), Herkül Millas (2007), Hikmet Çetin (2008), Tosun Terzioğlu (2009), Talat Sait Halman (2010), Cemal Kafadar (2011), Şafak Pavey (2012), Daron Acemoğlu (2013), İdil Biret (2014) and Gökhan Hotamışlıgil (2015).

Emeritus Ceremonies

Emeritus professorship at Sabancı University is bestowed on distinguished professors in good standing who have made great contributions to the university and society in general, and who retire after 68 years of age. Candidates are nominated by the Faculty Dean and must be approved by the President followed by the Board of Trustees.

In addition to attracting new and superior talent, Sabancı University aims to actively utilize the vast talents, knowledge and expertise of experienced faculty members with the emeritus professorship title. The title ensures that the scientific efforts and productivity of retired professors are supported, and that they take part in university activities.

Sakıp Sabancı Lecture Series

Given Turkey's geopolitical, historical and cultural significance, Turkey's role in contemporary global politics and the importance of U.S.-Turkish bilateral relations, Sabancı University & Istanbul Policy Center and the Brookings Center on the United States and Europe annually host the Sakıp Sabancı lecture to explore Turkey's emerging role in the world. Named in honor of one of Turkey's foremost business leaders and Honorary Chairman of the Sabancı University Board of Trustees, the lecture carries on Mr. Sakıp Sabancı's vision for democratic and economic reforms and its efforts to join the European Union.

The First Sakıp Sabancı Lecture is held in 2005, Named in honor of one of Turkey's foremost business leaders, the lecture carries on Mr. Sabanci's vision for Turkey's democratic and economic reforms and its efforts to join the European Union. The series features prominent American and European statesmen who engage with policymakers, academics, members of the media, and business leaders, as well as a large audience of students and professors at Sabanci University in Istanbul who participate via video conference.

Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards

In 2005, Sabancı University decided to announce and administer an international award in order to encourage research on all aspects of Turkish culture, society and politics, and to uphold distinguished examples of fresh research with a view to engaging intellectual attention on Turkey's role in the contemporary world. The ‘Sakıp Sabancı International Research Award’ has been endowed in honor of the late Sakıp Sabancı, Honorary Chairman of Sabancı University's Board of Trustees, and covers fields such as Turkish and Islamic Art and the History, Economy and Sociology of Turkey.
