Sabancı Üniversitesi ve Brookings Enstitüsü işbirliğiye 23 Mayıs 2006 tarihinde 2. Sakıp Sabancı Konferansı gerçekleştirildi. Konferansta, Dünya Bankası Başkanı Paul Wolfowitz, “Türkiye: Doğu ve Batı Arasındaki Köprü” başlıklı bir konuşma yaptı. Konuşmanın ardından düzenlenen törenle 1. Sakıp Sabancı Uluslararası Araştırma Ödülleri sahiplerine verildi.
Ödülün bu yılki konusu, “Türkiye’nin Yeni Jeopolitik Ortamı: Politikalarda Sorunlar ve Yeni Açılım Fırsatları” idi. Mansiyon ödüllerine “Which way to the Future? Üçüncülük ödülüne, “The Anatomy of Turkish-Russian relations” başlıklı makalesiyle Dr. Suat Kınıklıoğlu, (Director, The German Marshall Fund of the U.S., Ankara) layık görüldü. Üçüncülük ödülüne, “The impact of the European Union on democracy in Turkey and its implications for the region” başlıklı makalesiyle Demet Yalçın, (Assistant Prof. of International Relations, Dept. of International Relations, Koç University) layık görüldü. İkincilik ködülüne, “Turkey and The United States: From geopolitics to concerted strategy” başlıklı makalesiyle Ian O. Lesser, (Public Policy Scholar, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C.) layık görüldü. Birincilik ödülünü, Bilkent Üniversitesi, Siyaset Bilimi ve Kamu Yönetimi Bölümü’nden Yardımcı Doçent Lerna Yanık, “Beyond 'Bridges', ‘Crossroads’ and ‘Buffer Zones’: Defining a new international role for Turkey” başlıklı makalesi ile kazandı.
